Throwing in the Towel (Temporarily)

So Eurogamer is now here. After much deliberation I have decided that it’s not time for me to be Femshep just yet. Although I’m happy with a lot of things (like the outcome of the arm – below), the chest-piece isn’t quite right and being the perfectionist that I am I’m not prepared to wear something I’m not 100% proud of.

I knew it was ambitious when I started but I didn’t realise just how. Saying that, I have learned a lot about Cosplay and I think I’d be a lot better prepared for future attempts. I will continue to update this blog once I feel ready to continue but for now I’m well and truly pressing the pause button on this and getting my life back for a little while.

Baby Got More Back

image

So the back is about 92% complete, just need to (re) glue on the ‘shotgun holder’ & use some white spirit on the EL lights to get some of the primer off them. I’m pretty happy with how it looks so far. It is a little stiff so I’m a bit concerned about movement but we’ll overcome that hurdle when we come to it. I think building this costume has knocked about 4 years off mine and my other half’s life and she’s older than me ha! I will say Rub & Buff (Pewter Coloured) is amazing though!

Prime Time

Following on from gluing, gluing and yet more gluing I’m finally at the painting stage of my creation.  I seriously underestimated the level of skill required to create this beast and I would never be so foolish as to  be so adventurous again, especially when ‘Cosplaying’ for the first time haha!

Anyhoo here’s some snaps of my current progress and my glamorous assistant Michael (who will also hopefully be Cosplaying as a Vault 101 member at the EG Expo 2012) letting me use his shed to paint in as it’s permanently Monsoon season in the UK –

Here’s the primed ‘back piece’ too.

I used Hycote car primer to achieve this finish.  Next up I will be using Monster Colours ‘Moon-Roc Grey’ spray paint and hopefully some ‘Rub ‘N Buff’ (probably in Pewter) to get a metallic finish on the armour.  This should all be updated as the week goes on!

Baby Got Back

Here’s the top bit of the back glued and lit up with a lovely bit of EL lighting all the way from Hong Kong courtesy of eBay. Once again there’s some sealing on the way before spray painting fun can begin but I have to say I’m feeling pretty damn pleased with the results so far.

Seal…not the cute animals!

So this is around layer three of sealing. The back isn’t even glued yet. I’ve used Evo-Stik PVA from B&Q in a 50:50 water to PVA mix. Not sure if that’s right but I’ve read about a million (OK slight exaggeration) different guides advising that it’s wise to start with a heavy glue ratio to begin with as the devil’s foam (aka EVA) not only eats blades but drinks liquid like it’s going out of fashion. I’d say this needs at least another two layers before priming can begin.

More Fun With Guns

So this weekend I’ve decided to ‘go hard or go home’ with the cosplay and have 4 whole days off work.

image

To commence this creative feast I have started to prime the gun. Looking like a cross between Bane and a derranged woman and armed with a can of Poundland’s finest ‘Pro-Drive Auto Spray Paint’ I have put my first layer of paint on the water pistol. 2 or 3 coats with 30 mins inbetween is the initial aim. Here’s how it looks after the first:

Breasticles!

First major costume gluing and shaping is complete and here it is…

image

I’ve used a dremel to shape the detailing into the foam and then heat gunned it to buggery to seal it. A bit of sanding has resulted in some fairly clean looking lines. I also left a recessed part in the collar so that the N7 logo from my earlier post can be glued in there for a 3D effect. It’s a bit of an alteration on the original design, I call it poetic license haha!

New Blades….

Today while we’re getting the only day of Summer we’ve had in August I’ve decided to get back on the cosplay. Claire is busy creating a BBQ so I’ve been a massive help and created this N7 logo out of mousemat foam.

image

It looks a little shoddy around the edges but I was testing the capability of a Jakar snap off cutting blade on foam and it’s safe to say it handles it better than the X-Acto knife I’ve previously been using. Said device was purchased from Fred Aldous in Manchester for a whopping 99p. I am a happy girl.

Fun With Guns

So it’s taken me at least 2 hours to sand down the water pistol from today’s Boot Sale find and I’m now in the process of coming up with a design. I’m also possibly going to incorporate red EL wire into the build that’ll light up when the trigger is pulled. Hopefully the lovely guys at Fab Lab Manchester will be able to give me some circuitry assistance with rewiring!

Boot Sale Finds – Part One

I have been up at an ungodly hour this morning in order to trawl through other people’s  rubbish in the pouring down rain. I went with the intention of finding some unwanted Nerf guns to mod and ended up coming back with a 20p water pistol. I’m sure I can hack away and create something worthy of purchasing from Alliance Requisitions!
